The Department of Energy shared some good news recently as it disclosed that 29 renewable energy projects have been cleared to proceed. The 29 identified projects are composed of 13 solar, 13 wind, and 3 hydropower projects.
Among the biggest projects are a 375.4-megawatt-peak solar plant in Cebu and a 206.3-MW wind development in Northern Samar. Also slated for development are a wind project with a capacity of 100 MW in Iloilo and a 16-MWp solar project in Eastern Samar.
The endorsed energy projects will undergo systems impact study (SIS) to determine the impact of interconnection or integration with the energy grid. The technical study checks the capacity of the grid to accommodate the connection and integration of new power plants. Depending on the results, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), which oversees the SIS, can recommend the addition of transmission lines, transformers, or substations.
A total of 129 energy projects have been endorsed so far since January of this year. This includes 126 renewable energy projects and 3 energy storage systems.
While the 29 renewable energy projects are positive developments, the DOE has also announced that about 105 renewable energy projects are being terminated due to their failure to meet agreed schedules.
The Philippine Energy Plan aims to achieve an energy mix of 35% renewable energy 65% traditional energy by 2030.
