Visayan Electric, the second largest distribution utility in the Philippines, teamed up with the Aboitiz Foundation and the Department of Education in Central Visayas (DepEd 7) to implement its 2024 School Rewiring Project in key cities and municipalities in Cebu.
The initiative aims to upgrade and replace the electrical wirings of Cebuano public schools with old buildings and facilities that may pose fire hazards to students and teachers.
Present at the signing of the memorandum of agreement were Visayan Electric President and Chief Operating Officer Raul Lucero, Visayan Electric Reputation Enhancement head Queenie Bronce, and DepEd7 Director Dr. Salustiano Jimenez.
During the signing, Lucero relayed his thanks to the power company’s partners, saying “I am grateful that the Aboitiz Foundation and DepEd7 is one with our vision of creating a safe environment for our students.”
Meanwhile, Jimenez highlighted the significance of collaboration between the private and public sectors in ensuring a conducive and safe learning environment for students.
A Powerful Commitment to Cebuano Students and Teachers
The School Rewiring Project, now in its 14th year, is expected to benefit a total of 147 classrooms and facilities across seven public schools, ensuring that the electrical systems in these schools are safe and up-to-date. The schools included in this initiative are Iba Elementary School and Maghaway Elementary School in Talisay City, Vito National High School in Minglanilla, Jaguimit Elementary School and Antonio R. Lapiz National High School in the City of Naga, Liburon Elementary School in San Fernando, and Tabla Elementary School in Liloan.
To date, the power company has already upgraded a total of 5,275 classrooms and school facilities within its franchise area, which covers the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, Talisay, and Naga, as well as the municipalities of Consolacion, Liloan, Minglanilla, and San Fernando.
Partners Making a Positive Impact on Cebu Schools
Since the earliest days of Visayan Electric’s corporate social responsibility project, the upgrading of electrical wirings in public schools has been done during the summer break. It is also in support of the Bureau of Fire Protection’s efforts during Fire Prevention Month, which is observed every March.
The initiative is in line with The Aboitiz Foundation’s thrust towards improving learning facilities and producing employable graduates, and aligned with the government’s efforts to improve the quality of education and promote the safety and well-being of students.
The School Rewiring Project is a testament to the commitment of Visayan Electric, the Aboitiz Foundation, and DepEd 7 to promote a safe and conducive learning environment within Cebu’s public schools. By working together, the private and public sectors can make a positive impact on the lives of educators and students.
