Alsons Energy Development Corp. (AEDC), part of the Alcantara-led Alsons Power Group, is set to invest P4 billion in the Bago 3 run-of-river hydropower project in Negros Occidental.
The company has lodged an application to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for Bago Hydro Resources Corp. (BHRC), a project vehicle formed by Alsons to pursue renewable energy ventures in the province.
The 34.8-megawatt (MW) Bago 3 hydropower plant is designed to generate around 161.5 gigawatt-hour (GWh) of electricity per year at a 54.45% capacity factor. Construction is expected to span 30 months, with the facility built to operate for over five decades.
The planned project will be located in Barangay Minoyan, Murcia, and Barangay Pandanon in the municipality of Don Salvador Benedicto.

Other energy ventures
Alsons Power, Mindanao’s pioneering private power producer, operates four plants with a combined capacity of 468 MW, supplying electricity to more than eight million residents across 14 cities and 11 provinces in the region.
In 2024, it launched its inaugural renewable venture—the 14.5-MW Siguil Hydropower Plant in Sarangani—which is now fully operational.
AEDC and its affiliate, BHRC, were established to pursue renewable energy initiatives in Negros Occidental. Their current project seeks to deliver a reliable power source while helping lower electricity costs across Negros Island.
“The ACR is now extending its power project portfolio in Visayas Region with two currently ongoing project developments,” explained AEDC. “The AEDC, BHRC, and its affiliates in the APG are committed to continue contributing to the growth in Visayas and Mindanao by providing power generation to help spur and sustain economic growth, employing best practices to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations that benefit these regions, and working with the community for sustainable development.”

Scaling up
This year, Alsons Power is broadening its energy portfolio, with several power projects in development.
One of these is the 95.2-MW Bohol In-Island Diesel Power Station in Ubay, now nearing completion. Marking Alsons Power’s strategic move beyond Mindanao, the plant is intended to serve as a dependable backup, ensuring power stability during grid disruptions caused by disasters.
“This project will capitalize on opportunities in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) and Ancillary Reserve market over the next three to five years until additional plants are developed to address demand-supply gaps in the region,” revealed Alsons Power CEO Miguel Alcantara.
The company is also set to roll out its first large-scale solar power plant in the first half of the year. Alcantara stated that they are fast-tracking solar initiatives and remain focused on expanding their renewable energy pipeline.
Alcantara added that Alsons Power aims to boost its market presence by growing its share in the retail competition and open access (RCOA) system, which lets high-demand consumers select their own electricity providers.
