Negros Electric and Power Corp. (Negros Power) has secured a long-term 20-megawatt (MW) baseload supply from AboitizPower, marking a new step in efforts to reinforce energy reliability and support the continued economic expansion of Central Negros.
The Power Supply Agreement (PSA) was signed on November 13 at Negros Power’s office on Lacson Street by Negros Power president and CEO Roel Castro and AboitizPower president and CEO Danel Aboitiz. The deal was awarded to AboitizPower’s subsidiary Therma Visayas Inc. following a Competitive Selection Process conducted by Negros Power’s Third-Party Bids and Awards Committee.
Strengthening Supply Amid Rising Consumption
Negros Power said the contract is intended to support the region’s sustained upswing in electricity demand, driven by commercial activity and continuous customer growth. Castro noted that the utility’s customer base expanded from around 220,000 to 245,000 in just one year, signaling an acceleration of development in the franchise area.
“We are genuinely thrilled about this agreement,” Castro said, emphasizing that the long-term supply terms are “crucial” to meeting rising load requirements. He added that securing firm capacity allows the utility to plan ahead and ensure service stability. “With this long-term agreement, we can truly welcome the future with reliable service for our communities,” he said.
The additional baseload capacity is expected to help shield consumers from supply volatility and reduce the risk of interruptions, especially as Negros continues to attract new businesses and investments. Recent improvements made by Negros Power have significantly decreased power outages in the area by 70%
Expanding Partnerships
Aboitiz, whose company has been supplying energy to various utilities nationwide, expressed confidence in the partnership with Primeelectric and the broader Prime Group, which oversees Negros Power.
“I am very happy to be here, serving Primeelectric and the rest of the Prime Group. We are grateful to be in business with the group — they are easy to work with, and the partnership has been very fruitful,” he said.
For AboitizPower, the agreement builds on its strategy to provide reliable and competitively priced energy through long-term contracts, a model seen as essential in maintaining grid stability across the Visayas.
James Yu, AboitizPower’s Head of Revenue Operations, added that the PSA comes at a timely moment following recent typhoons and service disruptions that tested energy providers in the region.
“It is in difficult moments that our resolve is strengthened to restore power and bring light back to communities. At the core of this partnership is trust, and we thank Negros Power for their confidence in us,” Yu said, acknowledging the teams that completed the competitive bidding process.
Long-Term Outlook for Energy Security
Both companies emphasized that the partnership aligns with long-term goals of ensuring a resilient and sustainable electricity supply in rapidly developing areas. AboitizPower continues to position itself as a major player in the country’s baseload and renewable energy markets, while Negros Power is focused on maintaining affordable, dependable, and consumer-centered distribution services.
The 20-MW supply agreement is expected to contribute to a more stable power environment in Central Negros. This is an outcome viewed as critical by local businesses, investors, and policymakers pushing for more consistent energy infrastructure across the region.
